Green tea extract is an herb that is derived from green tea leaves. The proper name of the Chinese herb is Camellia sinensis. The herb is also known as tea tree, tea plant and tea shrub. Other teas that are harvested from this herb family are white tea, oolong, black tea and pu-erh tea. Green tea extract from the Camellia herb contains many potent antioxidants and is widely used around the world by people who are in the pursuit of good health.
Types of Extracts made from Green Tea
Green tea extract can be purchased and consumed in a variety of different formulas which include:
• Strong infusions. Strong infusions are processed by soaking the green tea leaves in an aqueous solution, or a solution that is water soluble. The solution for strong infusion green tea extract is made with approximately 2 percent alcohol.
• Dry extracts. Dry green tea extracts are processed by dehydrating concentrated strong infusions into a powder. The powder is then processed into capsules, tablets and dry mixes.
• Soft extract. Soft extracts are made from a solution of a strong infusion concentrated with catechin, a crystalline compound. Soft extracts are often used in tea bags.
• Purified extract. A partly purified green tea extract is achieved by using laboratory techniques like chromatography which separates the extract from the leaves. A purified extract is more crystallized and stronger than other green tea extracts.
Green Tea Extract in Food Additives
Because of its health benefits, the extract of the green tree herb is being considered for use in different types of food. These food additives would be included in meat, fish and pork to add antioxidants to the food. Scientists have also considered emulsifying green tea extract and adding it to vegetable oil and animal fats. Green tea extract is currently added to moon cake, a Chinese bakery item that is eaten during their mid autumn festival. The extract improves the flavor of the cake and increases the shelf life.
Contamination Prevention
In Japan, scientists have discovered that tea extracts, including green tea extracts, can be made into dyes that resist microbial contamination. In the future, green tea extracts may be used to eliminate this contamination in apple juice and other food and drinks. Green tea extract also has a strong deodorant quality.
Green Tea Extract and the Metabolism
Over the decades, green tea and green tea extract have been thoroughly studied and researched for its effects on people as well as animals. Some of the many advantages of green tea extract as it relates to health include lowering cholesterol, controlling diabetes and preventing liver disease. It is also a popular supplement for bodybuilders and other fitness gurus. The affect that is has on the metabolism is another reason many people take the extract in one form or another. Green tea extract accelerates the metabolism without overworking the adrenal glands. For otherwise healthy people, this has helped with losing weight. In addition, green tea extract, even in small amounts, has been shown to help to increase energy use in people with thyroid conditions.

QUESTION:
Does milk in green tea really cancel out the good benefits of green tea? How about sugar?
I herd somewhere that milk in your green tea actually reduces the health benefits. Is that true? And what about adding sugar and cinnamon? Is that ok?Since I herd the milk thing, I've only put 3 teaspoons of sugar and one teaspoon of cinnamon in it, is that fine?
-
ANSWER:
Green tea is healthy plain. The milk and sugar won't cancel green tea's benefits, they just add their own problems (sugar isn't good & milk has fat). 3 tsp. of sugar is a lot for a cup of tea.The cinnamon is fine, as long as it's pure, not mixed with sugar. Cinnamon is also healthy.
Try things like honey instead of sugar. Honey is a healthier food. It's not better than sugar for a diet or diabetes, but it has its own health advantages (and sugar has none). Lemon is a great addition to tea for flavor.

QUESTION:
What are the health benefits of Green Tea?
I've been drinking green tea regularly for while now, usually i sweeten it with honey.. What are the health benefits of green tea? Someone told me that it has many health benefits, what are they?-
ANSWER:
I first started drinking Green Tea about 2 years ago after I heard about it from an aunt (with Chinese family how could I not?) and really like the taste now. At first I used to add the water boiling and it would be soo bitter but if you add it a minute after boiling the taste is so fresh and delicate, but I can't stand it with anything sweet!Drinking green tea has many health benefits, for one it is full of antioxidants that keep the immune system working well. I hardly ever got sick or had colds before but I am told it should help people boost their immune systems, just as eating a diet rich in vegetables and fruit would add more antioxidants and vitamins into the diet and have notable health benefits.
Believe it or not rubbing green tea bags on your face after dipping in hot (not boiling) water really clears up acne and skin imperfections. Just don't let your neighbours see you doing it. GAH.

QUESTION:
Does iced green tea have same health benefits as hot green tea?
Do the health benefits of green tea change if I chose to make iced green tea? I'd like to start drinking homemade iced green tea with lemon (no sugar) more often.-
ANSWER:
Iced drinks make your body work harder, because it has to restore the body temperature back to normal range, in addition to digesting whatever you have consumed. Therefore it is best to consume green tea at close to body temperature, if you want to have the optimum health benefit. Iced green tea is a refreshing drink on it's own, but shouldn't be combined with food.
Also after having food it is not advisable to drink iced drink. This is because when taking icy drink with food it will solidify the oil staff in the blood vessel. It is best to take warm water after food or the warm tea.

Does adding ice change the health benefits of green tea?
This may been an obvious question but I just want to make super sure. I'm trying to lose some weight and green tea is supposed to help that process. QUESTION:
Can I get the same benefits of green tea if I mix the tea bag in cold water?
I work at the airport so no liquids coming through security and I am not paying for green tea every day I work.So if I have my green tea packet and drink it with cold water, will it have the same health benefits as if I were to drink it with hot water?
Thanks
I wish we had microwaves, unfortunately, we don't-
ANSWER:
I'm sorry to say no. One of the benefits of green tea is that it is served warm, which facilitates digestion and dissolves fat in the stomach. One of the reasons Asians are thin is because they have green tea with most meals. It increases metabolism, aids digestion, and reduces appetite. Some of the anti-oxidants will still get into the tea if you brew it cold, but of course you can dissolve more into warm water than cold. If it can't be hot, at least let it warm up to room temperature before drinking it. Many restaruants will give you hot water for free though, especially if you have your own mug.

QUESTION:
I know that green tea is good for you and has lots of major health benefits, but what about chai tea?
Specifically chai latte? It's just so good I can't keep my hands off it. But is it good for you at all? Does it have any health benefits like green tea does?-
ANSWER:
First off, Chai is not a type of tea in the same way that green is.
Green, red, black tea all refer to the various oxidation stages of the leaves used.Chai tea is tea (usually black, but not necessarily) to which spices and sugar and sometimes milk or creamer have been added.
Sometimes there is a fairly large amount of sugar/sweetener added to bring out the flavor, so you've lost some net health benefits there. With a chai latte, you have quite a bit of sugar/sweetener and milk/creamer added, which I agree definitely tastes good, but the combination of the sweetener and creamer counts against you.
To summarize, it certainly won't hurt you, but you're getting alot o tasty but unhealthy additives along with the tea. You still have some of the anti-oxidant benefits that come with black tea. But you definitely don't have the same health benefits that green tea offers.
My recommendation:
Have one every so often if you like them, but cultivating a taste for green tea would be better for you!

QUESTION:
Jasmine and Green tea benefits?
I recently went to a friends house, and she made me a cup of jasmine and green tea. It tasted SO good! I had to go out and buy some for myself. Are there any benefits to this tea? I know that green tea is supposed to be good for you but what about the jasmine? What does that do?
I need to add that I do not usually consume any caffeine, and I know that this tea must contain it becuase it does not say decaf on it, and i know that green tea does contain caffeine.I'm only having about 1/2 cup at about 6:30am..(Becuase I never drink anything containing caffeine, when I do, I have trouble sleeping at night)
-
ANSWER:
It is believed that the health benefits of jasmine tea may surpass those of green tea. Several studies have found jasmine tea lowers cholesterol levels. Other studies found that fruit flies lived 20% longer when jasmine tea was added to their drinking water. All teas (green, black, and oolong) are harvested from the same plant (Camellia sinensis). The method of processing creates the different types. Green tea contains the highest content of various antioxidant compounds (polyphenols) that have been proven as beneficial in fighting certain cancers, to help lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure, to help prevent food allergies, to reduce the risk of flu and infections, and to reduce the effects of aging. Vitamins C and E and beta carotene are also prevalent in green tea. Enough fluoride is found in green tea to help reduce plaque formation and bacterial infections in the mouth. The caffeine content found in green tea is about a quarter to an eighth that of coffee and less then a can of cola but varies with the brewing time.

QUESTION:
Do green tea drinks have the same benefits as plain tea.?
I bought Crystal Light drink singles in green tea. Does it have the same benefits as brewed green tea?-
ANSWER:
The reason green tea has so many health benefits is that it contains antioxidants, substances that prevent the cells in the body from being broken down.Crystal Light drinks and similar products are heavily processed, sweetened and homogenized, and even if the drink is based on green tea, the tea is strongly diluted and processed. Antoxidants are complex chemicals that can't take much processing before they break down into other substances without health benefits.
For that reason, Crystal Light and other preprocessed iced teas and soft drinks based on tea do not contain nearly as much antioxidants as freshly brewed green tea, and the health benefits are much weaker, if they exist at all.
Commercially available pre-mixed drinks and powders are also frequently full of artificial additives, and the long term effects of artificial sweeteners like aspartame are still unknown.
I guess this is not what you wanted to hear, but Crystal Light and similar products are no substitute for real green tea in terms of health benefits.
If you don't like the grassy taste of green tea (many people don't), one alternative is white tea, which has three times the antioxidant content of green tea, but a much milder, fresher taste. It is the healthiest tea there is.

can bottled green tea give you the same benefits that regular green tea has?
i keep hearing all the benefits green tea can have on your body. does it have to be the green tea that you brew yourself from a tea bag or can i buy bottled green tea (such as diet lipton green tea) and still gain the same benefits.-
ANSWER:
I brew my own and for health reasons not taste reasons I've learned to like it unsweet. brewing tea is easy, I bought a tea pot(just like the song) and brew it up, takes a few minutes. Plus if you sing the "I'm a little tea pot" song and do the motions you burn calories while brewing tea, genius huh?

QUESTION:
Do you get the benefits of green tea if you drink it cold?
I want to lose a few more pounds and I keep hearing how great green tea is to boost your metabolism and how it's full of antioxidants. Is it as effective when it's iced, or do you have to drink it hot?-
ANSWER:
tea is a very healthy drink don't get me wrong. it may boost your metabolism, but it won't boost it significantly like jogging a mile for example. It's chock full of antioxidants and may prevent some diseases and other ailments.the key to getting the benefits is brewing it hot. You can't really brew it cold because the hot water is required to release the oils and other substances in the tea leaves.
what you can do is brew it hot and put it over ice. you still get the added benefits that way. some people like to brew the tea twice as strong because the ice will dilute it.

QUESTION:
Drinking (cold) green tea benefits?
I heard that drinking green tea is really good for you but since it is summer i didn't want to be drinking something hot, so i have been adding a green tea tea bag to my water bottles and drinking that, does this have the same health benefits? such as weight loss, higher metabolism, and so on... and what are some other benefits of green tea i may not know about? Thanks!
-
ANSWER:
Green tea can be consume either hot or cold. Another quality of green tea is said to be that of appetite suppressant, another plus when it comes to weight loss. But it depends on the reason why you drink green tea. If you drink it instead of coffee, which is known to increase appetite, then it could actually reduce your appetite. In the same way, if you decide to drink green tea instead of a sweet drink, your appetite will be reduced due to the fact that, if you had a sweet drink, the sugar it contains would increase the production of insulin, which is known to boost your appetite. The more sugar you ingest, the more increased your appetite would be. In conclusion, if green tea takes the place of coffee and sweet drinks in your menu, you will be able to notice a decrease in your appetite, thus a greater chance to lose weight.Green tea is good for your health not only from the point of view of weight loss, but it is wonderful in every way. Here you have a few tips to lose weight drinking green tea: try to have 3-6 cups every day and you will notice that your appetite will be diminished, you will feel more energetic and, yes, you will lose weight. Anyway it also depend on the quality of green tea in question. Read more info at http://www.powerfulremedies.com/safe-weight-loss/24-greentea-weightloss-4121

QUESTION:
Does black tea have the same health benefits of green tea?
I really love black tea but I heard that Green tea is healthier but I've tried to make green tea several times and different ways and it always ends tasting like asparagus. Also does milk have any effect (other than adding fat)?-
ANSWER:
There haven't been many studies comparing green tea tea to black tea or other types of tea (oolong, white, Pu-erh, etc.). What few studies that there have been have had mixed or inconclusive results. For example, studies of the antioxidant activity of green tea vs. black tea have found that by one measure, green tea performs better, but by another, black tea performs better. Also, studies of the actual antioxidant content have found that there are different types of antioxidants in green tea vs. black tea, but the total content seems to be similar between both types. Most of the reason green tea has gotten the attention is historical...the early studies were mostly from Japan, and the Japanese drink almost exclusively green tea. If you want to read more about the relative health benefits of different teas, I have an article about it:
http://ratetea.net/topic/health-benefits-of-tea/8/
Not all teas are created equal though. Like the others have pointed out, there is high-quality tea and low-quality tea. I recommend, if possible, looking for high-quality loose-leaf tea.
Does milk interfere? Probably not. There was some early evidence suggesting that it did, by binding to antioxidants, but further research found out that this might not actually be true. I have a page on antioxidants that explains more: http://ratetea.net/topic/antioxidants-in-tea/25/
Lastly, if you want more info on green tea I also maintain a page on that; my site is a site with both researched info, and user-generated reviews, so you can get some info on the better companies to buy from and find teas you might enjoy more:

I hope this answers your question, and feel free to bug me if you have any further questions!
Good luck, and enjoy your tea!

QUESTION:
are benefits of green tea still effective when you add milk, sugar, etc to your tea?
i know green tea has numerous health benefits and i drink it 1-3 times a day,but i also add a little whole milk and sugar for flavor. does this lessen the health benefits?
i only add about 2-3 teaspoons off milk and i try to use splenda or 2-3 teaspoons of regular sugar-
ANSWER:
You should try and drink green tea as it is and not mix it with anything. The more you mix in with the tea the more you will dilute it and decrease the quantity of the good stuff. As you already probably know green tea is a powerful antioxidant with compounds that can shield you from many harmful diseases including cancer and heart disease. It is now known that green tea improves cardiovascular health, reduces the risk of cancer and helps with weight loss.

QUESTION:
what are the benefits of green tea? and can it be bad if i drink it like 4 times a day?
i make a large glass (equal to 2 cups) of COLD green tea with 4 packets of splenda. i drink this like 4 or 5 times a day, i just love how it tastes. is this bad for me, and could i gain weight from this?i guess i could do w/o the sugar, but it just doesn't taste as good.
-
ANSWER:
Green tea actually has a lot of health benefits, most specifically antioxidants which can help prevent cancer. You can check around the internet but there are about a million studies on its benefits and it appears there are no major drawbacks. I'd be more worried about the Splenda, it sounds like a moderately high amount of artificial sweetener to be consuming on a daily basis, but that's probably fine anyway.Green tea has a lot less caffeine than regular tea, which has less caffeine than coffee. (People argue with me about this all the time and tell me it's the opposite, but you can check with the FDA.)
In short, it's not bad, 4-5 cups of green tea per day may actually be good for you and maybe cut it down just a tad on the splenda. Have you tried a teaspoon of honey? That really isn't a ton of calories, especially compared to soda, and might be more enjoyable.

QUESTION:
what has the benefits of green tea, but tastes better?
i've heard/read that green tea is good for you, and i've also heard that black tea has just as many beneficial components.
the black tea i have is decaf... so which is better?-
ANSWER:
All tea is pretty good for you. Each has its own benefits. Decaf tea no matter what I believe is better, because caffeine can be very bad for you.-Green tea and black tea have a lot of antioxidants and are just plain better for you then many of the drinks out there.
- White tea is also good for you.
- For even more health benefits and no caffeine content try Rooibos tea. Its red tea, it tastes great, theres not caffeine, and its very good for you.
-Also try herb tea! Chamomile is an antispasmotic. So that helps with muscle tension, and still tastes pretty good.Try www.CUSTOMLEAF.com. On that website you can create your own tea blend. So you can find tea that is good for you and also tastes good! Go figure!
I created Rooibos tea with blueberry and vanilla!!

I love both! I had kidney failure a year ago almost today...
